We offer several different therapies, each designed to affect a specific system of the body, mind and spirit.

• Swedish Massage - Swedish massage is a relaxing and soothing massage using long, slow strokes, kneading, friction (designed to heat an area of the body) and where indicated, tapotement (pounding or tapping). While it may involve some deeper work in specific areas, it is generally not considered deep tissue work. As with all massage, some soreness in specific body areas can result in the days following the massage due to the release of lactic acid and toxins but these effects can be drastically reduce by consumption of large quantities of water for 24-48 hours afterwards. Regular Swedish massage can help to temporarily increase bodily circulation, improve metabolism and increase your general feeling of well-being.

• Therapeutic Massage - As it's name implies, therapeutic massage is intended to reach the deeper muscle tissue as well as connective tissue. It is usually intense and strenuous and the client will often feel extremely sleepy within 30-45 minutes afterwards. They may also experience some soreness in specific areas of work for several days after the massage but consumption of plenty of liquids can help to drastically reduce this soreness by helping the body to flush the lactic acid and toxins released during the massage. Benefits from this type of massage can persist as long as 3 weeks and regular therapeutic massage can help to temporarily reduce the muscular aching and soreness that results from tension, stress, exercise and over working of muscles.

• Chair Massage - This type of massage takes place in a specially designed chair which takes the weight and stress off of the clients lower back, legs and shoulders. The client is then given an over the clothes upper body massage. This is an ideal method for receiving some of the benefits of massage without having the lotion on your body and without having to disrobe. Many offices allow their employees to receive this type of massage during their breaks with a massage therapist on site.

• Hydrotherapies - At Hands of Velvet, Hands of Steel Massage, we offer several different types of water-based therapies. Most of them involve warm, wet compresses and wraps applied to specific areas of the body. The moist heat will soak into the underlying tissues helping to release tension, relax the muscles and temporarily increase circulation to that area of the body.

• Glows, Scrubs and Paraffin - Glows and scrubs are performed by applying a mixture of sea salt or coarse sugar infused with essential oils and certain carrier oils to specific areas of the body and then lightly massaged into the skin. this causes friction which quickly increases blood flow to that are of the body, exfoliates dead or dry skin cells and releases/draws out specific toxins. The area is then washed and all salt/sugar is removed. Foot or hand scrubs would then involve soaking in a warm water bath infused with essential oils to continue the process of drawing out toxins and improving your skin tone. Paraffin treatments involve dipping the hands or feet into a bath of liquid paraffin (not the type of paraffin that removes hair! Men, don't worry, there will be no scene like in the movie "What Women Want"!). Then, the area is wrapped in plastic and then a thermal mitt or bootie to help retain the heat while the paraffin oil helps to moisturize and exfoliate the skin.
